Ode to Stevie Ray
Legend in Bronze
by Joe Cook

I'm just sittin' and reminiscin'
It's got me real uptight.
'Cause I'm in the presence of a legend
And there's no sound stage in sight.

Just the image of a man in bronze,
A man I used to know.
Oh, Lord, what I wouldn't give
To have seen his last show!

I have memories of a boy of ten
Following in his brother's shoes
And soon the world would know SRV
'Cause he chose to sing the blues.

Now, heaven holds a special grace
For musicians, I've been told.
The good Lord loves music
And to some He gave soul.

In yesteryear, there was whiskey and beer
And too much party, so he told.
In his last scene, he was a clean machine,
A sign of hope for you and me.

His first love was an old Strat Fender
Played with flash, turned to splendor.
A mixture of style, he played with a smile
That would compliment his peers.

Albert Collins and King, Doyle helped him sing,
Buddy Guy and Brother Jimmie Lee
All helped to inspire, to our hearts desire
Now a legend has been made.

Now, Lord, could you grant me this favor
If only in my dreams
Upon a stage, turn life back a page
Let them play me one more show.

He played his guitar with a passion;
Strength and emotion flowed from each hand.
He was a Texas Ray of sunshine
And Double Trouble was his band.

If was his music down in the valley,
The last blues he would live to play.
Angels came that night to Alpine
To comfort them where they lay.

Now his songs and his warm spirit
Will be remembered, is my prayer,
And the stories told will be his touch of gold
And the magic when he played.

Now, heaven holds a special grace
For musicians, I've been told.
The good Lord loves music
And to some He gave soul.
